Every health insurance plan is different. However, many health insurance plans cover chiropody services under extended health care services (like physiotherapy and registered massage therapy). Most insurance companies cover a certain monetary amount for orthotics or chiropody services per year. It is the responsibility of the patient to get informed on his/her health insurance coverage regarding chiropody services.
Yes, we do! Kanata Foot and Orthotics Clinic has eclaims by Telus Health. That means the clinic directly bills the patients’ health insurance company so the patient only has to pay for the portion of the service not covered by their insurer. Eclaims helps eliminate the hassle involving insurance paperwork and decreases the patient’s financial barriers regarding their foot care needs.
No, a chiropodist is not a doctor since they do not have a doctorate degree in medicine. However, chiropodists are primary health care professionals. To become a chiropodist, you need to have an Advanced Diploma in Chiropody or equivalent (3-year program) after successfully completing a bachelor’s degree in science, life science or kinesiology. To practice in Ontario, you must have successfully passed the College of Chiropodist of Ontario’s board exams.

When a person suffers from diabetes, it is important to have their feet checked regularly. With diabetes, the nerves affecting your feet and leg muscles do not work properly causing weakness and lack of sensation. This may lead to foot deformities and a higher risk of ulcerations. During a diabetic foot exam, the chiropodist evaluates your feet biomechanics, the condition of your skin and nails and your nerve sensation to adapt their treatment plan accordingly. The chiropodist might cut your nails, debride some callus and offer advice to better protect and take care of your feet.

No, you do not need a doctor’s referral to become a patient at the Kanata Foot and Orthotics Clinic. However, sometimes your family physician may refer you to a chiropodist depending on your health condition.
Do you have flat feet? Do your feet, knees or hips hurt or feel achy after a day on your feet? Do your ankles seem to roll inwards a lot when you walk? Do you experience shin splints? Do you have a high arch? Do you experience pain in your heel or at the ball of your feet? Do you have hammertoes or claw toes?
These are all reasons why your chiropodist might recommend that you get a pair of custom-made orthotics. However, every patient is different. If you book an appointment with a chiropodist at our clinic, they will do an extensive evaluation of your feet to see if you might benefit from orthotics. We use a three-dimensional scanner or plaster of paris in order to create a mold representing your feet so the orthotics lab can fabricate a pair of orthotics unique for you. Orthotics are insole devices that help redistribute the plantar pressure of your feet accordingly and/or control your feet movement/biomechanics as you walk.
Kanata Foot and Orthotics Clinic is open Saturdays from 10am to 6pm. We are closed Sundays.
